Eggscelent

Eggscelent is a furniture-inspired sensory toy designed for Magis' Me Too collection, which focuses on emotionally engaging and ergonomically considered design for children. The project responds to the need for objects that encourage slow, intentional interaction in a world increasingly shaped by overstimulation and screen-based play.

Eggscelent is a hollow oval object with an internal structure that guides the movement of small grains. When the toy is rotated gently, the grains pass over a sequence of ridges and produce a soft, rain-like sound. The tactile and auditory feedback encourages fine motor development through controlled, rhythmic movement.

Its distinctive quality lies in the way it responds to touch. Calm movement produces a continuous and soothing sound, while vigorous shaking or dropping creates a sharper interruption. This contrast gently encourages the child to rediscover a more careful rhythm, making the toy both a playful object and a tool for attention and emotional self-regulation.

The project was developed through a user-centred process aligned with Magis' production philosophy. Materials and finishes were selected for safety, durability and tactile quality, while the geometry was refined for manufacturing and consistency with the brand's visual language. The result sits between play, learning and design culture: an object that entertains while supporting sensory awareness and controlled movement.

Eggscelent was selected as a finalist for the RoPlastic Prize 2023 and exhibited at Rossana Orlandi's gallery. The project reflects on the role of design in early development and on the sensory experiences through which children explore the world.
