Yerva
Yerva is a lighting project that combines sustainable technology, poetic interaction and ambient design. Conceived as both a reading lamp and an atmospheric light, it explores the energy generated by living systems through Plant Microbial Fuel Cell technology.
Yerva draws energy from the metabolic activity of microbes living around plant roots. As they break down organic matter, the microbes release electrons that are collected through an internal mesh designed to maximise contact with the soil. The concept uses this process to produce a soft light without relying on a conventional power connection.
The lamp consists of two modular elements: a vertical base that contains the energy system and supports the plant, and a removable light unit that charges through direct contact. The upper module can be detached for reading, ambient illumination or quiet nighttime use.
Yerva uses a minimal and organic formal language that reflects its relationship with the natural world. Its geometry is designed to support plant growth and energy production, while the low, soft light encourages a slower pace of use. The project treats the lamp not simply as an appliance, but as an object whose operation depends on continued care for a living system.
The project received several awards and recognitions, including first place in the Living category at Agorà Design, the Community Choice Award at the Isola Design Awards, and selection for inclusion in The Narrative Object by Istituto Marangoni and Giulio Cappellini. It was exhibited during Milan Design Week 2022 as part of Explore Cappellini Multiverse and later at La Cattedrale in the Certosa Design District during Milan Design Week 2023.
